Oaxaca Historic Center | Self-Guided Audio Walking Tour
110 minutes

About this experience
Oaxaca has almost never knocked a building down. It has changed what buildings are for. The Dominicans' convent became a cavalry barracks, then a car park, then a museum. Its drill yard became a botanical garden. The state archive became a painter's museum of ancient art. A bookbinder's house became a shrine to the servant boy who slept there and grew up to be president. Two people run through the whole walk: Benito Juarez, whose laws took the church's buildings, and Francisco Toledo, the painter who bought houses and gave them back as museums and libraries. Twelve stops, from the bandstand in the Zocalo up the pedestrian Andador to Santo Domingo, out to the Basilica de la Soledad and back to the cathedral. Self-guided, so the walk is yours. 12 stops, 3.2 km, about 110 minutes at an easy pace, narrated in English and Spanish with a live GPS map. No group, no guide, no set arrival time.
What's included
