Central Park Self-Guided Audio Walk: Bethesda Terrace, Bow Bridge, Belvedere Castle and Seneca Village
120 minutes
About this experience
Central Park looks like countryside the city left alone. It is not: nearly every meadow, lake, woodland and stream was built by hand from 1858, and you can learn to see it. Start at Grand Army Plaza, step down to the Pond under the needle-thin towers of Billionaires' Row, and walk the Mall's avenue of elms to Bethesda Terrace and its ceiling of floor tiles. Then take in Bow Bridge from Cherry Hill, pause at Strawberry Fields, get happily lost in the Ramble's built wilderness, and pass beneath Belvedere Castle, home of New York's official weather station, to see it across Turtle Pond. The walk ends on Summit Rock, the park's highest natural point, in the former Seneca Village. Twelve stops, about 4.2 km and two hours, in English and at your own pace. Start whenever you like; everything on the route is free.
