Lisbon Heritage Walk: After 1755, Grid and Maze, Self-Guided App Tour
1 hour and 9 minutes

About this experience
The earthquake of 1 November 1755 split Lisbon in two: a grid the engineers of the Marquês de Pombal could draw on paper, and a hill maze that refused to go. The walk starts on Praça do Comércio, where the royal palace stood until that morning, then follows Rua Augusta to Rossio. São Domingos still looks scorched inside. The Carmo nave has no roof. From Santa Luzia the terracotta of Alfama drops toward the Tagus, and the last climb is the battlements of São Jorge. Twelve stops, about 3.5 km.
