Kreuzberg was cheap because nobody wanted to live beside the Wall. Pacifists used a West Berlin loophole to dodge the draft, squatters kept buildings standing, and immigrants built the neighbourhood that followed. The walk starts at Kottbusser Tor, runs Oranienstraße past SO36, the club that opened in 1978 with a deliberately small stage, and reaches the East Side Gallery: 1.3 km of Wall painted in 1990 by 118 artists. It finishes on the Landwehrkanal, where the grass fills up on warm evenings. Ten stops, about 3 km.
